Support local breweries and the Second Harvest Food Bank
From the City of Longwood
The City of Longwood will host the Florida SMaSH Beer Festival this Saturday, an event created to celebrate the creativity and camaraderie of breweries in the Sunshine State, and to provide an opportunity to give back to the community. Proceeds of the SMaSH festival are donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, creating the perfect opportunity to feel good about your day drinking. And, for the first time ever, bands and out-of-state breweries have been invited to join in, making this annual event all the more fun.
At the SMaSH Fest, breweries around the state compete to win best beer, using one Single Malt and one Single Hop strain (hence “SMaSH” Fest, in case you’ve already gotten started on the drinking part…). Each brewery must concoct a beer made from the same single malt and single hop. This limitation forces brewers to think outside the box, while focusing on innovative flavor, outstanding quality, and technique.
This year’s chosen malt is Bairds’ 1823 Heritage Collection London Lager Malt, and the chosen hop is Yakima’s Quality Cashmere Hops. With roughly 80 beers to sample, including one-offs from every brewery, there will be something to please everyone.
Back to the “feel good” part of day drinking, this year’s SMASH Fest proceeds will be donated specifically to A Spoonful of Hope, Second Harvest Food Bank’s signature product line. 100% of the proceeds will directly support Second Harvest’s no cost 16-week Culinary Training program, which provides qualified, economically challenged adults with the culinary and life skills training to pursue a sustainable career in the food industry.
SMaSH Fest happens this Saturday, January 9, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Reiter Park, located at 311 West Warren Avenue in Longwood.
