Focus on Congress
From the office of Rep. Stephanie Murphy
On Saturday, at 10:00 a.m., U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy will host a U.S. Post Office dedication ceremony for Army Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe, a war hero who grew up in Oviedo and earned the Silver Star for actions in combat that led to his death.
Last year, Congress passed Murphy’s bipartisan bill to name the U.S. post office in Oviedo after SFC Cashe for his heroic actions. In 2005, while deployed to Iraq, SFC Cashe saved multiple soldiers after their fighting vehicle hit an improvised explosive device and caught fire. SFC Cashe returned to the burning vehicle, again and again, to pull his soldiers out of the flames, all while he himself was on fire and exposed to incoming enemy gunfire. He later passed away as a result of his wounds.
The ceremony will honor and celebrate SFC Cashe’s life and formally dedicate the post office in his name. It will take place at Oviedo on the Park, located at 357 Center Lake Lane in Oviedo. Family, friends, military leaders, and community members including Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere are all expected to be in attendance.
